Jeff Joins Calls for Review into Family Courts

Jeff Smith has joined MPs who have signed a cross-party letter calling for an inquiry into how the family courts deal with domestic abuse and other serious offences.

The campaign, led by Louise Haigh MP, argues that the current lack of transparency in family courts masks decisions which are made contrary to the interests of victims of domestic abuse, rape or violence and their children. This has led to the courts ordering children to have contact with violent parents, including some convicted of rape, assault and drug offences.

The Ministry of Justice have listened to the calls and have announced that they are launching a review into how the family courts protect children and parents in cases of domestic abuse and other serious offences.

Speaking about the campaign, Jeff said:

“Although transparency is important in maintaining the anonymity of families and children, it is clear that the current lack of scrutiny over family courts is seriously failing and threatening the safety of some children.

I am pleased that the Government has now announced a review into family courts in order to ensure that vulnerable children are being properly protected.”
