Along with millions across the country, Manchester Withington MP Jeff Smith is today marking the 75th anniversary of VE Day, which saw the end of the Second World War in Europe.
Although the coronavirus crisis has meant that street parties that were originally planned can’t take place, many people across the country will be holding celebrations in their homes to commemorate the day.
Speaking about the anniversary, Jeff said:
“At a time when people across the country are coming together to support each other through a national crisis, it is particularly fitting that we come together today to mark this anniversary.
Today gives us an opportunity to reflect on the courage and sacrifice of people from across the world who played their part in bringing about victory for the allied nations and peace in Europe.
I pay tribute to those who helped with the war efforts, both at home in the UK and by serving abroad.”
The Royal British Legion is calling on people across the UK to join in a moment of reflection and pause for a Two Minute Silence at 11am today.
Manchester City Council have published suggestions of how people can celebrate VE Day while social distancing, which can be accessed here.
