Visiting the newly built Chamber House Solar Farm, Jeff Smith has highlighted Labour’s plan to make Britain a clean energy superpower, a plan that would save billions off energy bills for British families by 2030.
Labour’s landmark plan to make the UK a clean energy superpower will slash energy bills for good, create hundreds of thousands of good jobs, and make the UK energy secure, while providing global leadership in tackling the climate crisis.
This world-leading commitment will give the UK energy security, make us an energy export superpower, tackle the climate crisis to leave a better world for our children, and, with renewables now nine times cheaper than gas, cut thousands of pounds off energy bills for good.
The visit comes after shock revelations from Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho that the Conservative government has no plans to bring down energy bills for families. When asked last week by the BBC if the only energy policy in the King’s Speech would help to cut energy bills, the Energy Secretary responded: “It wouldn’t necessarily bring energy bills down, that’s not what we’re saying.”
Last year, British households were the worst hit by the energy crisis in western Europe. Labour’s plans to make the UK a clean energy superpower will take up to £1,400 off the annual household bill and £53 billion off energy bills for businesses by 2030, by building clean, homegrown power for Britain.
Labour’s plan will create thousands of good jobs in the North West region – from electricians and plumbers retrofitting houses, to the construction workers putting up solar panels.
The plan also includes Labour’s commitment to create GB Energy, a publicly-owned, clean energy company, to make Britain an energy independent superpower.
Jeff Smith MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Clean Power and Consumers, said:
“The British people are sick of sky high energy bills and a Conservative government that has made our energy system weak and vulnerable.
“Ambitious Labour local councils like Rochdale are already leading the way with home-grown projects like the Chamber House Solar Farm, which will bring prosperity to Heywood and Middleton. Under the next Labour Government, projects like this will multiply.
“Every solar panel we install will not just be about tackling the climate crisis – it will cut your bills, create jobs in your communities, and make Britain energy independent.
“The choice at the next election is clear – high bills and delay on tackling the climate crisis with Rishi Sunak and the Conservatives, or lower bills and climate action with Keir Starmer and Labour.”
