Jeff Smith MP recently met with Chris Bryant MP, Minister of State for Data Protection and Telecoms, to address the rollout of new broadband infrastructure in south Manchester. This follows concerns raised by residents about the installation of telegraph poles by companies such as IX Wireless, BRSK and Grain.

During the meeting, Jeff raised the community’s concerns regarding the installation of new telegraph poles without notice – and stressed the importance of community consultation and prioritising using existing infrastructure where possible.

Minister Bryant highlighted recent actions taken by the government, including calling on network operators to share existing infrastructure and consulting communities more effectively before installing new equipment. The Minister also indicated that changes to regulations will be explored if operators do not improve their practices.

In the first instance, concerned constituents should contact Manchester City Council’s planning department (planning@manchester.gov.uk). The council can then refer these complaints to Ofcom, the independent regulator, who can investigate and take action if it deems it appropriate.

Jeff Smith is committed to ensuring that the voices of Manchester Withington residents are heard on this issue and will continue working with both the government and local authorities to find the best solutions for improving broadband access while preserving the character of local streets.
