Jeff Smith MP welcomes the Labour Government’s Autumn Budget, which focuses on delivering meaningful support for working families, strengthening the NHS, and restoring Britain’s economy through targeted investment. The Government has set out a Budget to deliver on the promise of change after a decade and a half of stagnation.
A Budget for Working People
Yesterday’s budget is designed to relieve pressure on working people without raising their taxes. It freezes National Insurance and income tax rates, provides a 6.7% increase in the National Living Wage to £12.21 per hour, and extends support programs like the Household Support Fund to help families with the rising cost of living.
Jeff Smith MP said:
“This budget delivers for families in Manchester Withington, ensuring they won’t face higher taxes while getting vital support to meet rising costs.”
Transformative Investment in Public Services
The Budget shows Labour’s commitment to the NHS, with an additional £25.6 billion allocated over two years to cut waiting times and boost capacity, including over 40,000 new weekly elective appointments. These measures will enhance access to healthcare for residents in Manchester Withington.
Additionally, Labour has increased the Core Schools Budget by £2.3 billion to recruit 6,500 new teachers and tackle subject shortages.
Jeff Smith MP said:
“With these investments, Labour is ensuring that our children get the best possible start in life, and that the NHS is there when we need it.”
Building a Greener, Stronger Economy
Labour’s focus is on long-term economic growth, with over £100 billion committed to public investment, including £500 million for the Affordable Homes Programme and over £2 billion to support the electric vehicle industry. This will ensure sustainable job growth and provide affordable housing options. For Manchester Withington, this means new jobs in clean energy and housing, as well as critical infrastructure upgrades that will improve daily life for all.
A New Direction for the Future
In stark contrast to years of austerity, this budget focuses on fairness and growth. Labour’s new policies, such as abolishing the non-dom tax loophole, raising the Windfall Tax and a Private Jet Tax, will fund public services without impacting ordinary taxpayers.
Jeff Smith MP said:
“This budget is about putting people first—giving working families a break, tackling NHS backlogs, and ensuring every investment delivers for the long term. For Manchester Withington, it means a fairer economy, more opportunities, and public services that work for everyone.”
