Today Jeff Smith MP met with the husband of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, to show solidarity with their hunger strike and support calls for her freedom.
Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe is a dual UK-Iranian national who was detained in Iran in April 2016. She was subsequently convicted on espionage charges, which she denies.
UK Parliamentarians from across the house have joined the Free Nazanin campaign and Amnesty International in calling for her release.
Emily Thornberry MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, said:
“We repeat our calls on the Iranian authorities not just to end the inhumane treatment Nazanin has been suffering in prison, but to end her unjust detention altogether, and allow her to come home with her daughter to London without any further delay.”
On 15 June 2019, Nazanin started a hunger strike in parallel with her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, who is camped outside the Iranian embassy in London.
Jeff met with Richard on the 11th day of his strike. Jeff said:
“Richard’s strength and determination is remarkable. He and Nazanin have my full support, and I’m glad I was able to go and show this in some small way.
“Visitors are welcome every day to express solidarity with the fight to free Nazanin.”
