Jeff backs Labour’s New Deal for Working People

Jeff Smith, Labour MP for Manchester Withington, has welcomed the party’s plan for a New Deal for Working People.

The New Deal pledges to:

  • Ban zero-hour contracts

  • Guarantee basic rights from day one
  • Give you stronger, properly enforced, protections at work
  • Strengthen sick pay and extend it to low paid workers
  • Tackle the gender pay gap

If elected, Labour has said that it will bring forward an Employment Rights Bill to legislate for this within a hundred days of taking office.

Jeff Smith MP said:

“I know from conversations across Manchester Withington that for too many people work doesn’t pay anymore. Working people are facing the biggest hit to living standards on record, trapped in the cycle of insecure work, with families pushed to the brink as costs spiral.

“It’s time for change. Labour has a plan to make work pay. Our New Deal for Working People will boost wages and make work more secure.”

Angela Rayner, Labour Deputy Leader And Shadow Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities said:

“The Tories promised to level up rights at work, but instead they’ve failed working people and ushered in a race to the bottom. People are worse off, trapped in the cycle of insecure work, and unable to plan for the future.

“Labour’s New Deal for Working People is our plan to boost wages, make work more secure and support working people to thrive. It’s how Labour will make work pay – ensuring a genuine living wage, banning zero hour contracts, and ending fire and rehire.

“A Labour Government will build an economy that works for working people, bringing forward an Employment Rights Bill to legislate for this within a hundred days of taking office.

“Our New Deal is core to our mission to bring growth in Britain, raising living standards and boosting productivity in every part of the country. It’s how we’ll end the Tories’’ cycle of low pay, low investment and low productivity.”

“As both a pro-worker and pro-business party, we know that only by creating well-paid jobs across all parts of our country will make working people better off and more secure.”
