Labour pledges action on rip off gig ticket sales

The Labour Government have confirmed that they will examine surge ticket pricing in a review after the cost of tickets for Oasis’s concerts more than doubled while on sale.

The government had already planned to review the secondary ticket sales market and promised to introduce “new consumer protections” on ticket resales in its election manifesto earlier this year.

The Culture Secretary, Lisa Nandy MP, said:

“After the incredible news of Oasis’s return, it’s depressing to see vastly inflated prices excluding ordinary fans from having a chance of enjoying their favourite band live.

“This government is committed to putting fans back at the heart of music. So we will include issues around the transparency and use of dynamic pricing, including the technology around queueing systems which incentivise it, in our forthcoming consultation on consumer protections for ticket resales.

“Working with artists, industry and fans we can create a fairer system that ends the scourge of touts, rip-off resales and ensures tickets at fair prices.”

Jeff Smith, Labour MP for Manchester Withington, said:

“The Oasis tour ticket pricing backlash has brought to light an issue that’s been affecting consumers for too long. I’ve worked on this issue over the years in opposition, including during my time as Shadow Music Minister and as part of the APPG on Music, and heard a lot about the negative impact it has on fans who end up priced out of seeing their favourite acts.

“So I’m really glad to see the Labour Government swiftly taking action, with the Culture Secretary set to bring forward a review that will include the use of dynamic pricing, fulfilling our manifesto pledge to introduce “new consumer protections” on ticket sales.”

  1. Dynamic pricing is wrong & penalises true fans in favour of the rich. Ticket prices should be set at a reasonable amount & not go up while you are waiting in a queue to pay. Resale of tickets at greater than face value should also be banned.
